Buffering Light: Achilles’ Heel of the Next-Generation Backbone Network

چکیده
How is current Internet infrastructure to cope with everincreasing bandwidth demands? Adding capacity to the present electronically switched network is common practice, and offers inexpensive but only temporary (bandwidth famine) relief. In the long run, it will become a necessity to rethink the technology itself. Moving to optical switching is the most viable option, but has a snake in the grass: optical buffering. Recent performance results point out that an optical buffer can never match a RAM buffer. Nevertheless, a delicate tuning of the design parameters can reduce the performance gap between the two tremendously. The tuning of the design parameters is the focus of my research. By means of probabilities, we at TELIN have developed several analytic models that capture the interaction between traffic, hardware parameters and performance. Since these analytical models have (extremely) low numerical complexity, and high robustness, they provide an essential tool for optical switch design. Next Generation Internet Backbone Router
Next generation Internet backbone node technologies are proposed that offer sophisticated QoS support including real time voice, video streaming, and VPN. The backbone network consists of small size IP + ATM nodes (Type-S) and backbone core nodes (Type-X). Type-S nodes support both ATM bearer and IP QoS services. In addition, the traffic control set between input line card buffer and output lin...

The offset-time-based QoS scheme has been proposed for the next generation Optical Internet as a way to improve current IP’s best effort service. For a single node, it has been shown that the offset-time-based scheme efficiently achieves service differentiation without requiring any buffer at the WDM layer. In this paper, the offset-time-based scheme is applied to the multi-hop case. To this en...

متن کاملSonographic evaluation of the immediate effects of eccentric heel drop exercise on Achilles tendon and gastrocnemius muscle stiffness using shear wave elastography
BACKGROUND Mechanical loading is crucial for muscle and tendon tissue remodeling. Eccentric heel drop exercise has been proven to be effective in the management of Achilles tendinopathy, yet its induced change in the mechanical property (i.e., stiffness) of the Achilles tendon (AT), medial and lateral gastrocnemius muscles (MG and LG) was unknown. Given that shear wave elastography has emerged ...
